Cold-Weather Equipment Maintenance: A Checklist for the Carolinas

The first wave of colder temperatures has arrived across much of the Carolinas. A little extra attention now can help protect equipment—from small dumpers to large aggregate crushers—and keep your fleet running smoothly through the season.

Fluids and lubrication

  • Choose cold-weather fluid grades. Follow the OEM’s recommendations for engine, hydraulic, and transmission oils suited to expected temperatures.
  • Check coolant protection. Confirm the coolant is at the correct level and concentration to help prevent freezing.
  • Reduce the risk of fuel gelling. Use winter-grade fuel or an OEM-approved additive. Keep tanks topped up and drain water separators daily.
  • Grease regularly. Apply the specified low-temperature grease to joints, pins, and hinges according to the equipment’s service schedule.

Batteries and electrical systems

  • Test batteries. Check battery condition and charge, clean the terminals, and inspect connections before temperatures drop.
  • Use engine heaters as directed. Plug in block or coolant heaters for the time recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Inspect electrical components. Check lights, wiring, connectors, and cab switches for damage, moisture, or corrosion.

Tires and undercarriage

  • Check tire pressure. Cold temperatures can lower tire pressure. Check it regularly and inflate tires to the equipment manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Clear buildup. Remove mud, snow, and ice from the undercarriage, steps, handholds, and radiator or cooling package each day.

Starting and warm-up

  • Warm up gradually. Follow the OEM’s cold-start procedure. Once the engine is ready, operate hydraulic functions gently while the fluid warms, before beginning heavy work.
